Eiken Grade 5 words, met inside stories.
Hoshi is a small star spirit trying to find his way home. Your child helps him by reading English picture books, and along the way meets the words of Eiken Grade 5, one at a time.

Mukashi is a story-based English reading app for children in Japan. It follows the Eiken framework: every child starts at Eiken Grade 5 and travels, world by world, toward Eiken Grade 2. It is made for elementary-school children (6–12), and from age 4 with a parent. It runs in the browser, with nothing to install.
Words, like stars
The words of Eiken Grade 5 are the things in a child's day. Door, cat, moon. In Mukashi they are placed through the stories a few at a time, and with every book they join up like a constellation. Touch a star to see what it means.
All 18 words here are Eiken Grade 5 words.
How one word becomes theirs
-

Meet it
Hoshi reads each page aloud in English. The word being read lights up, so eyes and ears follow together.
-

Touch it
In the worlds, touch a thing and hear its name in English. A lamp, a window, a cat.
-

Answer
Every book ends with a low-pressure comprehension quiz and a quiz where you pick the right picture.
-

Meet it again
Every book builds on the words of the last one, so the same word comes back in a new scene.
The Eiken map
The worlds are laid out along the Eiken levels. Every child starts at Eiken Grade 5 and travels, world by world, toward Eiken Grade 2. A new world opens about every month.

The full program is planned at 200+ books across 10+ worlds.
For you, the Lighthouse
The Lighthouse is the view for parents. It shows at a glance what your child has been doing in the worlds. You don't need to speak English yourself. Hoshi does the reading.

Next to a weekly English lesson
English grows better a little every day than once a week. For about the price of one lesson, a child can step into the stories every day.
| A weekly kids' English class | Mukashi | |
|---|---|---|
| Days with English | One day a week | Every day |
| Cost per month | About ¥8,000–15,000 | ¥1,980 (tax incl.) |
| Per day | Lesson day only | About ¥66 |
| Getting there | Often a drive or a walk | None. In your browser at home |
Class prices are a general guide and vary by school.
Questions parents ask
- Does Mukashi help with Eiken Grade 5?
- It builds the words of Eiken Grade 5 and the reading underneath them. Mukashi follows the Eiken framework, and every child starts at Grade 5. But the test is not the main purpose. Children learn English by reading stories, and the Eiken level measures that journey.
- What age is it for?
- It is made for elementary-school children (6–12), and from age 4 with a parent. A child who is completely new to English can start with Mukashi Prep, 40 books made for beginners.
- I don't speak English. Is that all right?
- Yes. Hoshi reads every page aloud in English, and the word being read lights up, so your child can follow the story on their own. In the Lighthouse you can see the words they have met and their Eiken level.
- Is this the same as Eiken Jr.?
- No. Eiken Jr. is a listening-centered test for children, with no pass or fail. Mukashi follows the Eiken grades, starting at Grade 5. Hearing and reading English every day still helps with Eiken Jr.
- What does it cost, and can I cancel?
- ¥1,980 a month, tax included, with nothing extra to buy. You can cancel any time. A second child is ¥1,480 a month. Start with 10 books and a game, free and with no signup.
Which door will you open?
The free demo opens on three doors: one for children brand new to English, one for children who can read a little, and Tanuki's phonics game. No signup.
